Dr Golly Paediatrician Answers Parents’ Most Asked Questions About Healthy Growing Feet & School Shoes

As a paediatrician, I’m often asked about children’s shoe fit and how it affects a child’s feet, posture, comfort, and long-term wellbeing. Parents want to know how to choose the right shoes, what to look for when buying shoes, and how to support healthy foot development as children grow.

Children grow quickly, and their feet change just as fast. Understanding shoe fitting is one of the simplest ways parents can protect their child’s foot health and help prevent future problems.

Why Proper Shoe Fit Matters for Healthy Foot Development

A child’s feet are soft, flexible, and still forming. Children’s feet grow rapidly, particularly during early childhood and through growth spurts at school age. Due to this, proper shoe fit is essential for healthy foot growth, natural movement, and overall comfort.

Shoes that fit properly help promote healthy development, support foot alignment, and reduce the risk of foot pain or further complications later in life. Poorly fitting shoes can interfere with foot development and contribute to a range of foot problems.

If you’re buying NEW SHOES, I recommend booking an in-store fitting with professionals to have them measured properly. If you’re purchasing online, you can download a FREE international shoe size chart.

DISCLAIMER: Always read the conversion charts of the brand you are purchasing before you buy, this is a general guide only. Another handy hint is to read online reviews and see if that particular brand ‘runs big or small’ compared to average.

How Poorly Fitting Shoes Affect Foot Health

When children are wearing shoes that don’t fit correctly, it can impact their overall foot health.

Kids shoes that are too tight may:

  • restrict movement of the child’s toes,
  • compress the child’s longest toe, and
  • increase the risk of ingrown toenails or plantar warts.

Kids shoes that are too loose may:

  • reduce stability and
  • affect how a child stands and walks.

Over time, poorly fitting shoes can contribute to foot pain, flat feet, altered foot alignment, and strain through the legs and back. Proper fit is especially important for active kids and active children who spend long hours on their feet.

Different Age Groups and How Shoe Needs Change

Younger Children and Little Feet

For younger children, feet are particularly soft and delicate. These little feet need shoes that allow natural movement and follow the natural shape of the foot. At this stage, appropriate footwear supports foot growth without restricting development.

For all my tips and hints on first walker shoes, I’ve got a comprehensive blog on the topic.

School-Aged Children and Growth Spurts

As children grow, growth spurts can cause shoe size to change quickly. Children grow unevenly, and foot growth often happens before parents notice. Regularly checking your child’s shoe size and overall shoe size is essential to keep up with your child’s growing feet.

Choosing Shoes That Support Healthy Development

When choosing shoes, parents should focus on key factors that support foot support, comfort, and stability. The best shoes for children include these key features:

  • A wide toe box to allow toes to spread naturally
  • A firm heel counter to support foot alignment
  • A cushioned and shock absorbing sole to absorb shock
  • Good arch support for developing feet
  • Lightweight materials that encourage natural movement

These features help ensure shoes provide proper support and promote healthy development.

School Shoes, Sports Shoes, and Everyday Footwear

School shoes should be supportive enough for long days of standing, walking, and play. Look for leather shoes or breathable materials that help keep feet cool and comfortable throughout the day.

For physical activity, sports shoes should:

  • absorb shock,
  • support active movement, and
  • protect joints.

The right footwear allows children to move confidently and comfortably during sport and play.

Shoe Fitting Tips for Parents

Tip 1: Where possible, have them measured and fitted by a professional – it can make the world of difference.

Tip 2: Always measure both feet and fit to the larger foot.

Tip 3: There should be a thumb’s width of space between the longest toe and the front of the shoe. This allows room for movement and growth.

Tip 4: Shoes with adjustable straps, adjustable closures, laces or velcro straps help achieve a secure fit and accommodate changes throughout the day. A secure fit is especially important for growing feet.

Signs Your Child Needs New Shoes

Parents should watch for signs that shoes no longer fit properly, including:

  • Complaints of foot pain or tired legs
  • Red marks or pressure on the feet
  • Changes in how a child stands or walks
  • Shoes wearing unevenly
  • Reduced confidence or activity
  • Reluctance to wear shoes

These signs may indicate it’s time to reassess shoe fitting and head back to the shop to find the perfect pair.

Preventing Foot Problems Early

Good footwear choices can help reduce the risk of foot problems and associated foot complaints such as:

  • flat feet,
  • plantar warts,
  • ingrown toenails, and
  • long-term alignment issues.

Supporting a child’s foot health early helps prevent further complications as children grow.

Working with trained shoe fitters and, when needed, experienced podiatrists, can provide added reassurance for parents concerned about foot development.

Final Advice From Dr Golly

Choosing the right shoes isn’t about top brands alone, it’s about understanding key factors in shoe fitting, selecting appropriate footwear, and prioritising comfort and support. With the right shoes, children can stay active, confident, and comfortable as they grow.

Healthy feet support healthy kids,  and the right shoes make all the difference.

Important Medical Disclaimer

This information is intended for general educational purposes only and does not replace individual medical advice. Every child’s feet develop differently, and footwear needs may vary based on age, activity level, and underlying conditions.

Parents and caregivers should:

  • Consult your paediatrician if your child has ongoing foot pain, delayed walking, abnormal gait, or foot deformities
  • Seek professional assessment for children with neuromuscular, orthopedic, or developmental concerns

Footwear alone does not diagnose, treat, or prevent medical conditions, but appropriate shoe choices can support healthy foot development when combined with normal activity and movement.
