The tips below will hopefully help you get the most out of my courses and content.
Remember there’s no right or wrong way to learn – if they don’t resonate with you or your family don’t stress:
TIP 1: Start when you are pregnant:
- Complete the Preparation for Newborns course or read your Baby Doesn’t Come with a Book before your baby arrives
- Again, don’t stress if you haven’t, families have success at any age and being empowered and prepared from day one is usually helpful though.
TIP 2: Complete the course as a couple
- Having both parents engaged in the content and working toward the same goals will help on so many levels
- Team work makes the dream work
- Our babies and children love and crave consistency, so both parents being armed with the same information, agreed settling techniques and routines is the key to the whole family getting a full night’s sleep!
- Remember, the only thing dads or partners can’t do is breastfeed.
TIP 3: Share routines with other carers & childcare
TIP 4: Prioritise great sleep environments and remove hurdles that could be driving discomfort
TIP 5: Remember not every day is perfect
Try not to get sleep obsessed:
I don’t want families to get sleep obsessed. ”How are they sleeping?” is often the first question you’ll get from well intentioned friends and family. Even the BEST sleepers have rough patches, rough nights, changes in sleep patterns. Like I said in tip 5, not every day is perfect. If you have really strong sleep foundations and you are consistent you can be confident that you’ll return to normal after any hiccup or change.
You have not failed as a parent if your baby isn’t a great sleeper
Don’t define your happiness or success around perfect sleep – while great sleep is linked to nearly all physical and emotional outcomes even the BEST SLEEPERS are prone to the occasional wake up or rough night, you are not a bad parent if your baby wakes and you haven’t failed if they have a bad nap. You’ll be amazed at how much easier sleep is if you don’t obsess over it.
I’m the case study for this one – my kids were TERRIBLE sleepers, it’s how I got into this business. Veteran parents of multiple children including ‘great sleepers’ will tell you every baby is different and what’s more what’s happening around you and them is different.
If you have a highly unsettled baby there are lots of things you can do to help uncover what is driving discomfort see my blog on colic for more, but even with all the tricks in the book your baby is probably going to be more sensitive than others and we’ll likely need a bit more TLC when it comes to sleep …the silver lining is these parents with sensitive babies invest so much time energy into sleep hygiene and sleep foundations they usually have the BEST sleepers as toddlers – so don’t be disheartened, the work you do when they are little will pay off when they are bigger.
